Luxury vinyl plank and laminate are the two most common floors we're asked to compare, and it makes sense - both give you a convincing wood look at a friendlier price point than solid or engineered hardwood, and both hold up well in busy households. Water and Moisture Resistance
This is the single biggest difference between the two. LVP is built from a waterproof vinyl core, so standing water, wet boots, or a leaking dishwasher won't swell or warp the planks. Laminate's core is compressed wood fiber - it handles everyday spills fine when wiped up promptly, but it's not designed for sustained moisture. In a region where entryways see a lot of wet weather from fall through spring, that's worth weighing carefully for mudrooms, kitchens, and lower-level rooms.
Pets, Kids, and Everyday Wear
Both hold up well to daily household traffic when installed with a quality wear layer, but each has its own personality under stress. LVP tends to be more forgiving of dents from dropped items and is easier to spot-clean after muddy paws track through. Laminate's harder wear layer resists scratching from claws well, but a joint that takes on water repeatedly over time is more likely to show it. Underfoot Feel and Sound
LVP generally feels a little warmer and softer underfoot, especially with a cushioned underlayment, and it tends to run a bit quieter. As a general rule, laminate runs a bit less per square foot than luxury vinyl plank, though the ranges overlap quite a bit depending on the plank thickness, wear layer, and finish you choose.
